Vatican: Pope Francis is in good condition and will remain in hospital for a week

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said that Pope Francis is in good health and will remain in hospital for 7 days, after undergoing successful intestinal surgery.

"His Holiness Pope Francis is in good general condition and is alert and breathing normally," Bruni added, according to the Italian news agency (ANSA) today, Monday.

He explained that the surgery he underwent yesterday evening at Policlinico Gemelli Hospital in Rome included a hemicolectomy from the left side and lasted about 3 hours, adding that he is expected to stay in the hospital for 7 days, unless complications occur.

For its part, the Italian government explained - in a statement - that Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi expressed his best wishes for a speedy and speedy recovery to the Pope after the surgery.

And the Vatican had said - late yesterday evening - that the Argentine Pope had responded well to the surgery performed by a team of 10 doctors.
