The mayor of Tokyo announces the cancellation of all public viewing areas for the Olympic Games

Tokyo Mayor Yuriko Koike announced Saturday the cancellation of all public viewing sites for the Summer Olympics, with some venues converted to become coronavirus vaccine centers.

"I think these are necessary measures when looking from different points of view for a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games," Koike said - after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, according to the Japanese newspaper (The Japan Times) -.

The public viewing ban follows a decision by the metropolitan government this month to scrap plans for a public viewing site in Yoyogi Park in central Tokyo and turn the venue into a vaccination center.

The meeting between Suga and Koike, the first since May 21, came ahead of an online meeting next Monday by Olympic organizers where they will decide on the number of spectators at the Games.
